Comparison between HVDC and AC

        The problem towards deciding which technology to use when projecting a transmission grid for a certain amount of electrical potency and transmitting it to a consumer center resides in three main aspects: environmental, economic and technical.

        In the last few decades the worries with environmental impacts that a said enterprise can bring rose considerably. Even the visual impacts of the transmission cables are now taking in consideration.

        It is necessary that inside of a project the losses in transmission are well evaluated. That is the main reason that boosts the studies for developing the new cables technology and it boost the development of HDVC power grids as well.

        Generally speaking, we can highlight the following advantages towards HDVC:

  • Voltage manueverability;

  • Losses reduction;

  • Raw materials and Manpower saving;

  • Benefits towards the environment;

  • Noise reduction;

  • Best option for densely habitated zones

         At the same way we can list the disadvantages towards HDVC as well:

  • Elevated costs towards it`s implementation and construction;

  • New electrical substations can not be built;

  • Limited potency of short circuits;

  • New transformers can not be attached to the system;

  • In monopolar HDVC grids, any metallic material in the soil is corroded (including the base of the transmission tower).

        After all discussed above, we can conclude that HDVC can be extremely advantageous as a transmission alternative when in great distances (644 kilometers or more).
